Excerpt: This fast paced, hands-on, bash scripting session will have you tapping keys and sharing code. Come learn how to convert your daily GUI tasks to automated code! Please bring your bash questions and we will try to answer them!

Description: In this 75 minute sessions Mac admins will learn how to complete day to day GUI processes and complete them using the terminal. We’ll look at various tools, which can be implemented through the Terminal, that are available to admins for installing software, changing preferences, creating directories, managing files, and reviewing system information. From Terminal we’ll explore taking the processes and automating them using Bash scripting.
We’ll discuss common text editors that can be used to create and edit your scripts. We’ll delve into commands that will help your script go from creating variables to making decisions. Together we will examine the flow of a script from the beginning to the end and discuss common methods to test for success or failure. Chris Lawson – IT Consultant/Support Specialist – Penn State Altoona

Chris Lawson IT Consultant/Systems Administrator, Classroom and Student Technology Services, Penn State Altoona Chris is the IT Consultant for the Penn State Altoona Communications Program and an Apple Systems Administrator for the Classroom and Student Technology Services group at Penn State Altoona. Chris has provided support, consulting and systems management for the Communications Program since 2010. He is responsible for maintaining and managing operations of the Communications program’s TV and audio recording studio, as well as deployment, maintenance, and hardware support of Penn State Altoona’s Apple systems for labs and podiums. Chris is an ACMT (Apple Certified Macintosh Technician) and relishes in working with Apple technology. In his spare time, he enjoys teaching “Intro to Video Production”, gaming, anything comic book based, attending concerts and playing and performing music with his upright bass.
