Life in a post Xserve world

Speakers: Lucas Hall, Sean Kaiser

Level: Foundational, Lecture

Excerpt: As much as many Mac Admins love the sound of the whirring aging xserves sitting in their network center, many are far past an end of life, we face the question of ‘whats next’?

Description: As much as many Mac Admins love the sound of the whirring aging xserves sitting in their network center, many are far past an end of life. Whats next? Having an integrated file server and service based device is still possible- but not with as Apple centric as it used to be… This session will examine the process of moving from the aging devices to network stores. Stemming from a project within my district where we (Sean Kaiser & Lucas Hall) migrated from 16 Xserves to a combination of 17 Synology NASs, Mac Mini’s and Virtual Machines. This discussion won’t be overly technical, rather a time to talk about migrating from the old to the new, the current and future options of file servers, all within a mac centric environment while having budget minded implementations.
