Learning from each other: how Big IT departments and Small IT departments can benefit from each others’ environments – Tom Bridge & Justin Esgar

Big IT departments manage hundreds, if not thousands, of machines through modular and monolithic imaging, huge directory service clusters and volume licenses. Small IT departments manage many small one-off machines, often without the benefit of directories, bindings and volume licenses. What could they possibly learn from each other with workflows that are so massively different?

Well, just about everything.

Big Enterprise can learn about better user trust, a longer hardware cycle (and its cost savings!) and not overkilling the tools for the trade, as well as how to craft together solutions using nothing but a spare modem, a router and some zipties.  Small IT can learn about the structure of automation and repetitive maintenance that saves time, as well as best use of shared resources, imaging and bootstrap tools in cost-effective ways.

This session will start with some case studies and move into collaborative brainstorming to effectively cross pollenate and create alliances between Enterprise and Independent admins.

Focused on streamlining IT costs while maximizing IT resources, Technolutionary is a practice focused on businesses with less than 50 computers. He lives in the District of Columbia with his wife, Tiffany, a content strategist, and their cats Macro and Bokeh.
